Default GD2 and Safe Mode

I talked to my host and he said that while they run the latest in PHP & MySQL, they aren't experts on it. He says that there is GD2 and safe mode but he isn't very knowledgeable on them. His first thought is that "they" would want safe mode on. My question, on the GD2, is this something that is on or off, I assume set by the host? Also, is safe mode something that I turn on or off?

On shared hosting, GD2 and safe mode are most likely only installable/settable by your host. More information for your host, about GD and safe mode, can be found at the following links:
